Borough Market London | Foodie Paradise

Updated on

London has a few famous street food markets and because of that it is an awesome place to try a variety of food from all over the world. During our city trip we ate at different street food markets, of which one is Borough Market. Probably the best known of all street food markets in London. It certainly is a Foodie’s paradise.

Borough Market

After several hours of walking through Shoreditch, fighting our way through the tourists near The Tower of London and crossing the Tower Bridge, we were hungry! We knew that on the other side of the Tower Bridge there is a street food market somewhere. Not knowing if it is open on Tuesdays or not we walk alongside the Themes in the direction of the London Bridge, where the market is supposed to be. Fortunately it was open!

After walking around for a few minutes we make a good, although slightly boring, choice: Kir had Paella, her favorite Spanish dish, and I took Pad Thai, since I had it several times after coming back from our journey in 2014, but it never tasted as it should. This time it did! Three Thai girls and a tall Caucasian dude were preparing the dish like it should! Delicious!

The Borough market is at Borough High Street, ever since the 13th century. The dozens of stalls sell all kinds of food and drink, from pork head to fruits, from Saki to Sangria. You name it, they have it. The location is also as if taken from a movie: the Overground trains criss cross on the maze of bridges which is about 20 meters above the market.

In silence we eat our meals sitting against a wall, inspecting people who walk by. Really a great experience overall. If you visit London, you really can’t afford to skip it! And since it is situated very close to the Tower Bridge, you really don’t have an excuse to do so.

As mentioned, Borough Market is the oldest and most famous of all street food markets in London. Situated near the Thames, close to the Tower Bridge, it’s easy to reach it on foot from the city center. As early as the 13th century merchants sold their goods near the Themes at this spot. It is a place crowded with tourists, obviously. But also a lot of locals eat lunch and diner at the end of their day.

The Borough Market is open from:

How to get there: The market is very close to the south end of the Tower Bridge. So it’s easiest to get there on foot or by bus. If you’re coming from the center by the Underground, it is best to get off at the south side of the London Bridge.
