Bilbao does probably not come to mind when asked to list five Spanish cities quickly. The city is the 10th largest city of Spain and it is becoming an increasingly popular place to visit. A visit to the Guggenheim Museum is one of the most well known things to do in Bilbao. The city has […]
San Sebastián surprised us with it’s beautiful location and laid back vibe. When you think of Spain, the first thing that probably comes to mind are Madrid, Barcelona and the Costa’s. Basque Country is not really regarded as a top tourist destination. Sure, it’s not as hot as the east coast and it’s turbulent past […]
Hi! Welcome to Travelaar!
We are Erick and Kirsten (32 & 31). After our half year trip to South East Asia in 2014 we decided to start Travelaar on which to write about our travel experiences. With Travelaar we hope to give useful tips and inspiration to travel the world as well!
In January 2016 we left for our second big trip to visit South East Asia, Australia, the Middle East and Central America over the course of two years. The original Travelaar website is in Dutch, and in 2017 we decided to go international launching Travelaar.com. We hope you like it!
Iran is a pretty big country, so you will have to make choices about where to go. We, like most people, chose to go from Tehran to Shiraz. This route takes you to a lot of well known sights and some lesser known places. I recommend to spend at least two weeks to do the […]
Dubai is known as a fairly expensive destination. Because of this we “only” stayed two full days in one of the newest metropoles in the world. In this article we answer the question “How expensive is Dubai?”. One thing I can already tell you; Dubai is cheaper than we thought it would be!
Looking for a nice holiday destination where you have one sun, sea and beach, but at the same time can also do cool things and make a nice road trip? The Yucatán peninsula in Mexico is the ideal destination. The Yucatán peninsula is located in the south of Mexico and is about 3.5 times the […]
For many, a stop at Las Colorades on the coast of the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico is not on itinerary because it lies off route. You have to drive for a few hours, but I promise you it’s worth it. The few hours we spent in Las Coloradas is for me one of the highlights […]
In November 2017, we travelled sixteen days through magical Iran. And of course we kept the balance on how much we were spending. In this post we explain in detail how much we’ve spent on our two week road trip from north to south. Read on if you want to backpack in Iran. It might […]
Isla Holbox in southern Mexico – Quintana Roo – is a paradise like you find in the travel guides. White sandy beaches, swaying palm trees, the sea in 50 shades of blue and green, and pelicans that dive into the sea and chill on the fishing boats. With a little bit of luck, you even […]
Kuala Lumpur can be seen as the great hub for South East Asia. This is because of the cheap flights to almost everywhere in Asia. Not surprisingly we’ve spent more than a month in total in the metropolis on eight different visits. There are a lot of things to do in Kuala Lumpur, so we […]
Iran is becoming increasingly popular as a backpacker destination. Rightfully so if you ask us, because this beautiful country deserves more positive attention. Although public transport in Iran is well arranged, we chose to rent a car in Iran. The freedom that comes with a rental car ensures that you arrive at places where normally […]

Laws about clothing in Iran keeps a lot of people from visiting the country. Iranians are wonderful people and their country is beautiful. We want to shed some light on what to wear when visiting Iran. Iran is an Islamic republic and that means that there are a number of rules that you must adhere […]
Traveling to Iran -especially for first timers- might be a bit frightening at first. There are rules to oblige to and laws to follow that might as well come from the past. To us, ‘western people’, being told what to wear and what not to wear seems very oppressing. Although Iran is becoming more open […]
Bali is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Asia. Rightfully so, because everyone can enjoy themselves here. Whether you like beautiful beaches, pristine nature, good food, waterfalls, temples or impressive coastlines. On this Indonesian island you will find it all. After spending several weeks on Bali we have seen enough places to list […]
Backpacking in Iran needs to be at the top of your do to list as a backpacker. It has been at the top of ours, because we have been drawn to the country for years. Maybe because of stories from other people, maybe from our history books or maybe because our media tends to depict […]
Sri Lanka is an incredibly impressive and versatile country. With breathtaking nature, green mountains, spectacular waterfalls and tea plantations, there is plenty to discover. The contrast between tropical beaches with its hot climate and the hills with its cool climate makes Sri Lanka a really interesting place to visit. If you want to know what […]
The Gili islands is an island group just off the coast of Lombok. The archipelago consists of the main island of Gili Trawangan and the smaller islands of Gili Meno and Gili Air. The islands each have their own ‘specialty’ and their subsequent atmosphere. But one thing is certain: Whichever island you choose, you’ll spend […]
Just half an hour from the well-known Indonesian island Bali you will find three more peaceful and smaller islands; Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida. You won’t find mass tourism like on Bali on these islands. Beautiful beaches, infinity pools, a beautiful underwater world and adorable locals. Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan are great […]
If you thought that Nusa Lembongan is Bali’s paradise, then you have not been to Nusa Penida yet. Nusa Penida lies, like Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan just outside Bali, but is a lot more pristine. Many ferries can be found to drop you on Nusa Lembongan, but only a few go on to Nusa […]
In May 2015 we spent a week in Macedonia on a short road trip through the Balkans, or at least a part of it. The Balkans are becoming increasingly popular. Rightfully so if you ask me, because the region is spectacularly beautiful, the people are very warming and, not unimportantly, it’s not very expensive. It’s […]
Our statistics show a lot of people are looking for information about traveling to Sri Lanka, an amazing country still mainly unexplored most backpackers. To help you plan your trip to this versatile country we put some essential information together, so you won’t face unexpected surprises.
Money, even if you want to go on a backpacking trip and you are mostly going to hitchhike or couchsurf, you will always need money. That’s why we are showing you how much we’ve spent in different parts of the world. Keep in mind that we always travel like so called “flashpackers” which means we […]
Back in ’14 we spent a few days in Great Britain’s capital on a city break. Apart from loving the city while there, we kept the camera’s rolling. Even though it has been a while, I’m pretty sure London hasn’t changed that much since we’ve been there. Enjoy our short compilation of two days London!
