About 260 km from Addis Ababa and 40 km from Hawassa, lies the unique village of Yergalem. A place that is often skipped by travelers, but definitely worth a visit. The village itself is not that special, but the surrounding nature is. Gigantic coffee and banana plantations, mixed with the jungle. In Ethiopia it is […]
The second you set foot on Ethiopian ground, you can smell you are in Ethiopia. Mainly campfire and spices. Something you won’t expect in a city like this, but Addis Ababa is different. The capital city is vastly growing and has plenty of hotspots, upcoming neighborhoods and lots of sights to visit. Addis Ababa is […]
Hi! Welcome to Travelaar!
We are Erick and Kirsten (32 & 32). After our half year trip to South East Asia in 2014 we decided to start Travelaar on which to write about our travel experiences. With Travelaar we hope to give useful tips and inspiration to travel the world as well!
In January 2016 we left for our second big trip to visit South East Asia, Australia, the Middle East and Central America over the course of two years. The original Travelaar website is in Dutch, and in 2017 we decided to go international launching Travelaar.com. We hope you like it!
Bahir Dar is a very relaxing city in the Northwestern part of Ethiopia. You can take a dive at the origin of the Blue Nile, or swim under the waterfall. There are many unique monasteries on lake tana, worth a visit. From the lakeshore it’s possible to see hippos. Since the city is flat, biking […]
Just a half hour flight from the capital Addis Ababa you will find the fast growing city of Hawassa (Āwasa). One of the best known tourist hotspots in southern Ethiopia. If you like nature and animals, this city is the ideal place to visit. It may be a city, but nature is not lacking. The […]
Bali is known for its green rice terraces, cool dive- and surf spots and its idyllic coastline. But Bali is also known as one of the most tourist destinations in Southeast Asia. Not surprising, since the island has a lot to offer. Are you traveling to Bali and are you looking for a destination without […]
There is no doubt about it. Venice is one of Europe’s most popular destinations. And it’s without a question the most popular and most visited destination in Italy. With over 28 million visitors in 2017 the Venetian government decided Venice is too crowded. As of this year tourists have to pay a small entrance fee […]
Even though Croatia is no longer a hidden gem in Europe, it is still an amazing country with lots of undiscovered places. Other than its neighboring countries, which are only just being discovered, Croatia already conquered a spot among the top touristic places in Europe. Croatia is an amazingly beautiful country with lots to offer. […]
Croatia is one of Europe’s most beautiful countries. Not surprisingly the country is getting more and more popular among tourists. Stunning nature combined with really affordable prices make it a great travel destination. Croatia is mostly known for it’s coastline and natural parks in the mainland, but beyond the beach (literally) there are more than […]
Spain is second on the list with most popular tourist destinations on the planet. With over 80 millions tourists in 2017 they are only topped by France. Spain is on it’s way to take over the first position and to us that’s no surprise. We love Spain! Whether it’s a long holiday or only a […]

Pamplona isn’t probably the first Spanish city you’ll think off while planning a trip to Spain. I get that but it’s such a shame. Pamplona is located in the Navarra region in the north of Spain. Allthough the city isn’t really big the ambience is amazing and so is the city’s surrounding area. We traveled […]
Bilbao does probably not come to mind when asked to list five Spanish cities quickly. The city is the 10th largest city of Spain and it is becoming an increasingly popular place to visit. A visit to the Guggenheim Museum is one of the most well known things to do in Bilbao. The city has […]
San Sebastián surprised us with it’s beautiful location and laid back vibe. When you think of Spain, the first thing that probably comes to mind are Madrid, Barcelona and the Costa’s. Basque Country is not really regarded as a top tourist destination. Sure, it’s not as hot as the east coast and it’s turbulent past […]
Iran is a pretty big country, so you will have to make choices about where to go. We, like most people, chose to go from Tehran to Shiraz. This route takes you to a lot of well known sights and some lesser known places. I recommend to spend at least two weeks to do the […]
Dubai is known as a fairly expensive destination. Because of this we “only” stayed two full days in one of the newest metropoles in the world. In this article we answer the question “How expensive is Dubai?”. One thing I can already tell you; Dubai is cheaper than we thought it would be!
Looking for a nice holiday destination where you have one sun, sea and beach, but at the same time can also do cool things and make a nice road trip? The Yucatán peninsula in Mexico is the ideal destination. The Yucatán peninsula is located in the south of Mexico and is about 3.5 times the […]
For many, a stop at Las Colorades on the coast of the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico is not on itinerary because it lies off route. You have to drive for a few hours, but I promise you it’s worth it. The few hours we spent in Las Coloradas is for me one of the highlights […]
In November 2017, we traveled sixteen days through magical Iran. And of course we kept the balance on how much we were spending. In this post we explain in detail how much we’ve spent on our two week road trip from north to south. Read on if you want to backpack in Iran. It might […]
Isla Holbox in southern Mexico – Quintana Roo – is a paradise like you find in the travel guides. White sandy beaches, swaying palm trees, the sea in 50 shades of blue and green, and pelicans that dive into the sea and chill on the fishing boats. With a little bit of luck, you even […]
Kuala Lumpur can be seen as the great hub for South East Asia. This is because of the cheap flights to almost everywhere in Asia. Not surprisingly we’ve spent more than a month in total in the metropolis on eight different visits. There are a lot of things to do in Kuala Lumpur, so we […]
Iran is becoming increasingly popular as a backpacker destination. Rightfully so if you ask us, because this beautiful country deserves more positive attention. Although public transport in Iran is well arranged, we chose to rent a car in Iran. The freedom that comes with a rental car ensures that you arrive at places where normally […]
